Awesome post! It's amazing how we've all heard this before, yet we're always looking for the quick and easy way to get links coming in. Just goes to show that some of the older tactics are still relevant today. If you build something for the sake of your sites readers they will link to it. (if you build it they will come?)

Great post again, thanks for the reminder!

Brilliant post, with lots of great ideas. Thank you for the brain food.

I run into this situation all the time with some clients. They present a problem, I tell them about a solution that worked for someone else, and their response is, "Well, that wouldn't work for me," or "What does that have to do with my business?" Or they focus on an obstacle (real or perceived) and decide it can not be overcome. Translating a solution from one business or situation to another is beyond their comprehension. Even when it is explained to them, they can not see it.

*sigh*

Yura's comment about the educational system is on target. In school, we are taught to look for the one correct answer. In life, there is not one correct answer, but many.

"Marketing metrics give the illusion of certainty and control.

Editors note: I snipped the irrelevant link drop instead of spamming the comment cause that quote is funny as hell. :D

I'll admit, when I first saw Matt's post dated 2005, my initial thought was "How relevant can this be in today's marketplace?"

As I read the article, it just re-inforced to me that you can always find new and inovative ways to implement linkbait. Even something as simple as a contest will garner interest on the internet.

I think most people are afraid to experiment because they do not want to fail. The first thing they should do after taking a look at creative writing is to actually review their website from an objective point of view. What would help you as a site visitor? If this were the first time you came to the site, what improvements would you like to see? What are your competitors doing that you are not?

The possibilities are endless, if you just take a look at your site and be honest with yourself. Even stes with the most traffic can always use improvement.

Oh, and the reason I wrote all that. There is much more to creative thinking than just doing something that you recommended (though, I suspect, that'll help). It is a mindset, a way how you think, not just not really defined "creative thinking".

Great post, I moved into the big leagues last May when I was hired by Beanstalk Search Engine Positioning and it just blew me away what real SEO was compared to what I had dabbled at. When it comes to ranking successfully its about strategy, creativity diversified link building which ads to the quality of the internet instead of being spam. When an SEO has done their job correctly a website should just organically rank with only an SEO knowing any better if they happen to look at the backlinks, I believe organic also means transparent.

Excuse me for going a little off topic, but the lack of skills to apply one successful tactic to another field/industry/case is the consequence of the US education. Where people learn facts, but are not taught how these facts relate between the industries (from math to physics to chemistry and so forth). This thing alone doesn't give the US people a chance to use their knowledge successfully.

If I were going really offtopic, I'd say that this education system is perfect for producing very skilled and very niche specialists that know nothing about other industries, thus giving the government skillful and cheap labour, but I am not going to say that.

The reason I touched this topic is that Russia is going to jump from teaching how to think yourself to how to remember facts (US/european system) and I am very, very concerned about this.

Cheers.
